Downtown - East Village

     

History

The East Village is located along the Bow riverbank, east of the downtown commercial core. The Bow and Elbow Rivers, the adjacent riverbanks, St Patricks Island and Fort Calgary are physical attractions of the East Village. The aesthetic appeal of such major open spaces is increased by a location beside the dramatic downtown skyline.

The three communities are the Downtown, East Village and West End mainly consist of high-rise condominiums and townhouses.

Statistics

There were 23 East Village condos sold in 2009 with an average sale price of $238,347 and a median sale price of $252,500. The average days on market was 61 days.  

Shopping

Bankers Hall - A retail gallery with three levels of specialty stores including Henry Singers, Blu's, Carati and Helly Hansen. It also has restaurants and a food court. The Calgary Eaton Centre/TD Square has four levels of stores offering accessories, sporting good, gifts, restaurants and services. The Bay and Holt Renfrew are the anchor stores. Stephen Avenue Walk is situated along 8th Avenue SW and spans from 1 St SE to 4 St SW. It is home to live performances, buskers, music, festivals, artists and culture galore, not to mention the great stores and amazing restaurants like the The Trib. There ar nine major shopping centres/department stores in the downtown area. Some of Calgary's finest restaurants, pubs, cafes, and bars are located here.

Famous Landmarks

Chinatown - A small but flourishing community along Centre Street by the Bow River. It offers the core of classic Chinese cuising, along with modern stores, small grocers and herbal stores. Fort Calgary - In 1875 the North West Mounted Poiice crossed the Bow River to build Fort Calgary. Today, it brings history to life through exhibits and interpretation. Set on 40 acres of riverside park, the site includes the Deane House and Restaurant and the 1875 palisade and 1888 Barracks.

The Downtown core has the majority of Calgary's best restaurants. Chinatown in particular offers a wold of flavours with notable restaurants Tang Dynasty, Ginger Beef Express and Pine Lake Restaurant catering to your every need.

Schools & Education

The fine Public schools: William Reid Elementary, Elboya & Mt Royal Junior High, and Dr E P Scarlett & Henry Wisewood High Schools. The Catholic schools: Sacred Heart Elementary, St Monica and St Michael Junior Highs, and St Mary's High are located nearby.
