Eau Claire

     

History

The name Eau Claire derives from one of Calgary's original industries - a sawmill transplanted from Eau Claire, Wisconsin and staffed by mostly Norwegian mill workers. The area on the banks of the Bow River was selected in the 1880s for its easy access to fallen timber. The community was subsequently names for the Eau Clair Lumber Company.

Shopping

Within a short walk of Eau Claire is the Calgary Eaton Centre, TD Square, Scotia Centre, and Bankers Hall. There four adjoined malls in the downtown feautre four levels of stores and services including major retailers such as Holt Renfrew and the Bay. Stephen Avenue walk also has a number of major retaiers and speciality stores.

 

 

Sports & Fitness

The very energetic can take to the pavements and river pathways for walk, jog or cycle. When the weather is warmer, you can always float down the river. Try you hand at Curling located across the river in the Calgary Curling Club. The City of Calgary operates the Beltline Aquatic and Fitness Centre just south, and the Talisman Centre, which is the finest fitness centre in the city only a short drive away.

Famous Landmarks

Eau Claire Market is the focal point of the community. It sits immediately south of the Bow River and was built on former Industrial land. The mall is home to several unique and "one of a kind" stores and galleries, a movie theatre, food court and several restaurants.

Restaurants & Bars

On the weekend, head down for a great Brunch at the River Cafe. In Price's Island Park, this restaurant has a elegant fishing lodge atmosphere. The seasonal menu features products from small Alberta farms and ranches, and includes smoked fish and game, butter poached Atlantic lobster, BC sablefish and wood-fired flatbreads. For families it has hard to go past the Old Spaghetti Factory, near the market is great for lunch and dinners.

Schools & Education

The fine Public schools: Connaught Elementary, Mt Royal Junior High, and Western Canadian High Schools. The Catholic schools: Sacred Heart Elementary, St Monica and St Michael Junior Highs, and St Mary's High are located nearby.
